Thursday 4/9: Nine on the Ninth @ Busboys and Poets

Here's a note from the host, Busboys and Poets Poet-In-Residence, Derrick Brown...

National Poetry Month is upon us. As Spring slowly blooms so does poetry, though here at the Nine On The Ninth, we celebrate the vibrancy of poetry all year round, every Ninth day of the month at Nine in the evening.

I never thought that I'd be able to get these talented writers together one one stage, at one time, but I lucked and caught them both with openings on their book tours and new that The Langston Room had to be a destination that they had to reach while touring the country.

Not to mention both of their books are on sale in our amazing bookstore Busboys and Poets Books which is owned and operated by the great non profit Teaching For Change.

Check it..
DeLana R. Dameron holds a B.A. in History from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and has a strong interest in the intersections of history and literature. Her poetry has appeared in numerous journals and anthologies, including The Ringing Ear: Black Poets Lean South, PMS: PoemMemoirStory, 42opus, storySouth, Pembroke Magazine, and Borderlands: Texas Poetry Review. She has received fellowships from the Cave Canem Foundation and Soul Mountain and is a member of the Carolina African American Writers Collective. Dameron, a native of Columbia, South Carolina, currently resides in New York City.

Raina J. León, Cave Canem graduate fellow (2006) and member of the Carolina
African American Writers Collective
, has been published in The Cherry Blossom Review, Natural Bridge, OCHO, Poem.Memoir. Story, Black Arts Quarterly, Womb, Boxcar Poetry Review, Salt Hill Journal, Xavier Review, MiPoesias, Torch: Poetry, Prose and Short Stories by African American Women, Poetic Voices without Borders , Gathering Ground: A Reader Celebrating Cave Canem's First Decade, Growing Up Girl: An Anthology of Voices from Marginalized Spaces, AntiMuse, Farmhouse Magazine, Furnace Review, Constellation Magazine and Tiger's Eye Journal among others with forthcoming work in African American Review. Her first collection of poetry, Canticle of Idols, was a finalist for both the Cave Canem First Book Poetry Prize (2005) and the Andres Montoya Poetry Prize (2006).

I'm not sure if you realize the powerful words and the stage presence these two women possess individually. So image what's in store when they step on the stage together to engage the audience with their amazing new works. I'm also excited because after all the poetry has been read, the tears have been dried and the applause has died down, I get to interview them both and get to the center of what makes them poets.

I expect to see you there early. C'mon its National Poetry Month! You deserve to spoil yourself and indulge in some delicious poetry!

I hope that's enough convincing. Now comes the fun part: Tying everything together.
