UDC Sleep Out for NO TUITION INCREASE!

UDC Firebirds Against 100% Tuition Increase
Tuesday, February 10, 2009 10:00am - Wednesday, February 11, 2009 7:00pm

Here's some details about the event:

"UDC students are facing more than a 100% increase in tuition. The UDC Board of Trustees are voting on February 11, 2009 to disenfranchise students attending the University. These financial and economic times call for relief among the student population, not an increase. UDC Students are among the many Americans and international students facing foreclosure on homes, job losses, family members who are committing suicide because of economic hardship. We must say No to an increase in tuition and stand up for those who cannot already afford an education. UDC is an institution that protects education by making it affordable and accessible. With this increase we are sure to lose our grip on access and the very right to an education."

If you're a student at UDC, or know someone who is, you should go and support the cause. It's bad enough you have to pay mad bread to get a post-secondary education and now they want to jack up the price.

Hey, nice Post Sonya I just read that in the Washington Post this morning, here is a link to the article, "A Degree of Agitation In UDC Transformation". I fully understand what your saying , but you would think that if they get a better institution at the end of the day why not pay more. Now 100% does sound like a lot and it is, but if I get a better education, how much is that worth? $3800 to $7000 is huge for some people, but the plan they are proposing looks like it will make the School better in the long run.

I just wish they could phase it in a little better. They're talking about making these changes for the next incoming class, which if you have been saving for one amount could really jam you up. Now I think the students do deserve to be herad and help shape the institution they are attending. To make wholesale changes like the ones being put forward requires the input of everyone. I just hope they knew what they were getting with this new President they have, it seems this guy has a track record of things like this.

It also looks like the only place left to find good old fashioned Civil Disobedience is on a College Campus. I think it was a couple of years ago that Galludett students shut down their Campus for a week. Hey I hope both sides get what they want and the Students get what they deserve, a better School.

P.S. See ya Wednesday Sonya.

I just read the article in the Post and I have to agree with you. I didn't know the graduation rate was 16% which is embarrassing. Having a community college and four-year school is an excellent idea, especially if they want to raise the bar for admission requirements. I'm still not feeling the tuition increase though.
